CROTON-ON-HUDSON, NY — The Woody Guthrie and the Clearwater pass each other during the annual Clearwater Festival at Croton Point Park on Sunday, June 16. Public sails were offered on both sloops during the two-day festival, which celebrated 50 years since the launch of the Clearwater and 100 years since the birth of Pete Seeger, who had the 106-foot Clearwater and the 47-foot Woody Guthrie constructed. The Clearwater was built to inspire a cleanup of the Hudson River. In 1978, the Woody Guthrie, a replica of the Clearwater, was launched to support that cause. The Beacon Sloop Club now owns the Woody Guthrie and offers free sails for up to 12 members of the public on weeknights during the summer. The Clearwater serves as a floating classroom for students during the spring, summer, and fall and hosts public sails at a cost of $50 for adults, $35 for Clearwater members, and $15 for children.
